The science behind TMD. The temporalis muscle, the temporomandibular joint, and Masseter muscle

TMJ Health with Botox

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, otherwise knows as TMJ, can be a painful and disabling condition.   Botox isn't just for cosmetic purposes; it can also benefit your overall dental health, particularly  in managing TMJ disorder.

TMJ Education

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint is located at the base of the skull.  It connects the lower jaw and the temporal bone, which is on the side of the skull.  It allows for the movement required for chewing and talking.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms:

  • Pain or a tired jaw while eating
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Pain when touching the TMJ area or the jaw muscles
  • Headaches or earaches
  • Difficulty opening and closing the mouth
  • Changes in bite
  • Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

  •  Chronic grinding or clenching of teeth leads to disk damage
  •  Inflammation of the muscles surrounding the TMJ
  •  There is misalignment of the teeth or jaw
  •  TMJ cartilage is damaged through arthritis, dislocation or erosion

How Botox Can Help with TMJ:

Botox can help by temporarily reducing jaw tension and can ease pain or other symptoms of TMDs. This can improve jaw movement and even the ability to chew. However, it is not a cure for TMDs.
