Partials and dentures

Photo of a partial

Partial

A flexible partial denture is a type of dental prosthesis used to replace missing teeth to restore oral function and aesthetics.  It's a removable appliance designed to fit around the existing teeth in the mouth.  They are often made of flexible, nylon-like material that's more comfortable and less conspicuous than traditional rigid dentures.

Dentures

Dentures are removable oral appliances that replace missing teeth.  There are many types of dentures, including full, partial and implant supported dentures.  With proper care and maintenance, the average lifespan of a denture is seven to ten years.

When to replace your dentures/partials and why

  • There is chronic irritation underneath the denture.
  • Denture adhesive is needed in order to eat, or they do not remain in place by themselves.
  • If the patient cannot wear the denture.
  • The denture is degraded so that it does not fit the mouth properly.  Teeth have broken, discolored, cracked, or are missing.
  • If there is a change in the teeth supporting the partial.
  • This time frame has been more than 5 years since the denture has been made.
